Ambulance work in SF area

topic posted Thu, December 28, 2006 - 5:53 AM by  Blend
Does anybody know if EMT-B's can work for an actual salary on ambulances in the SF area, or is it strictly on a volunteer basis? The reason I ask is because I'm in North Carolina right now, but will eventually be moving back to Cali, and the only guys that get paid over here are paramedics. Oh, and if they DO get paid, about how much might the expected starting salary be?

in most urban and suburban areas in Ca all EMTs are paid and there are no volunteer units unless you count SAR. Starting wages range from $10-$15 an hour.

I work for Royal and they are currently hiring with a signing bonus ($500) and full benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401k, gym membership). Starting wage depend on prior experience but is in the $10-15/hour range. Both FT and PT positions available.

Something else I was kinda wondering: most jobs are five days a week, but most jobs are also only 8 hours or work. What's the work schedule like, usually? 4 days of 12 hour shifts, or you still gotta work 5?

From my experience, many are 12 or 24 hours shifts, depending on the Company/Agency. You end up still working 48 to 60 horus a week. The first 40 hours of the week is paid as "straight time" the remainder is at Overtime (aka time and a half). I used to work a 60 hour week. That was 2 24 hr shifts and a 12 hr. per week. That was a "fixed" shedule meaning I work the same days each week. Other Companies/Agencies might have a 1 day on, 2 day off schedule.

As you can see, there are MANY different ways that companies/agencies work. I would BET that they vary from area to area and State to State. Hope this helps.

oh cool, I didn't even know 24 hour shifts existed. I might not know what to do with myself if I only worked three days a week! lol

And not really, Itty called me last Friday, but I haven't really heard from her hat all since then. All I know is she landed and met whoever it was that she was supposed to meet.
