Re: Two EMT's assaulted
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 3:37 PM[nod] Sounds all-too-familiar. Unfortunately, a lot of apparently unconscious people tend to "come up combative" -- either by reflex or on purpose. Sounds like something along the lines of the "nudge their foot with your foot" as an initial method of assessing responsiveness might be a good method for use in the future.
Sorry that this happened to them.
Regards to all,
Jay

Re: Two EMT's assaulted
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 7:06 PMAnd if it's not patients who come up combative, it's friends/family/associates who take out their frustration on EMS personnel, whether it be anxiety over the patient's situation, denial about the patient's need for care, or something else altogether. --Jon

Re: Two EMT's assaulted
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 11:24 AMyeah see thats what really kills me about this whole thing. The guy was a mess. He had deficated all over the place the stall was a mess. He was passed out naked on the toilet and there was no way we where going to step in that sh**. The EMT pulled out a non-rebreather and a couple ammonia sticks, she turned the mask up to 15 lbs and put the ammonia sticks in the path of the o2 that was coming out creating a breeze in his direction.
He came back conscious and reached outside of the stall and pulled her in by her hair and then rotated her around in the stall and started beating on her with his back to the door. All too deliberate an action I cant think of an excuse if he was actually too f-ed up to think. She wasnt even close to him.
It's just really sad to me, we dont get this kind of stuff very often (my station is in suburbia), but we've all been burned on calls (figurativly or literally). -

Re: Two EMT's assaulted
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 3:36 PM'Tis really a shame we all have to try to help some that clearly
(in retrospect) do not deserve it. But it's life. I reserve judgemnet until after we clear the hospital. Then we talk a blue streak. One way of dealing with humanity, in all its' variety.
I'll keep on keeping-on.
Be safe y'all...
